Foster Parents
The main goal of foster care is to provide children and teens with a temporary, warm and caring home environment during a crisis, until family conflicts are resolved and they can be reunited with their families.
Becoming a Foster Parent
Love, understanding and guidance for a child who needs to develop physically, emotionally and socially; Opening your home and family to a child who has been abused or neglected; Venturing into a relationship to guide a child through their growing years; Embracing a child into the security of your stable home and family.
Qualities
Today’s foster parents are:
- Patient
- Supportive
- Accepting of differences in others
- Willing to make a commitment
They are members of a team and have good listening and communication skills, a sense of humor, a willingness to grow and learn, a capacity to give, and an ability to provide good supervision.
Who Can Become A Foster Parent?
Singles and married couples may become foster parents if they are the pre-service training, requirements include:
- Adequate income too support your family’s needs
- Adequate living space for foster children
- Inspection of home by a family development specialist
- Physician’s statement verifying emotional and physical health
- FBI fingerprint clearance
- Three personal references
The Foster Child
Foster children represent all ethnic groups and all ages, from infancy through teens. Some children have behavioral or emotional problems as a result of neglect/physical/sexual/ or emotional abuse. Every foster child deserves the love, affection, and guidance a family can give.
